On 23rd April 2000, the head of the Federal Department of Home Affairs, Federal Councillor Ruth Dreifuss, approved the NRP "Antibiotic Resistance" Implementation Plan. The call for project outlines took place on 25th May 2000.
48 outlines by 41 researchers (6 female, 35 male), requesting CHF 20.4 million were submitted by the deadline for submission of project outlines (15th August 2000). Based on approximately 200 evaluations by international experts, the steering committee invited 25 project leaders to submit a full research proposal. The deadline for submitting research proposals was 15th February 2001.
Basing its judgements upon the outcome of a review process, as well as on its own assessment, the steering committee recommended 21 projects for funding. The Research Council/Executive Committee approved them at the request of the expert advisor. The research phase of NRP Antibiotic Resistance began on 1st July 2001.
A second call was issued in July 2003. The start of research was set for July 2004 and all projects must be completed by the end of June 2006
